High School Equivalency Test Preparation
High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) preparation is designed to assist individuals in earning a high school equivalency diploma. More than 95% of employers in the U.S. consider High School Equivalency Diploma graduates the same as traditional high school graduates in regard to hiring, salary, and opportunity for advancement. (Source: American Council on Education)
HiSET preparation is designed for adults who have not completed high school and who want to study for the HiSET. It is open to anyone 18 years of age and older, having less than a high school education and not currently enrolled in the K-12 system.
Instruction is designed to meet the individual needs and educational levels of each person enrolled in the program. All classes are free of charge.
However, there is a $90 fee for the HiSET. Upon receiving a passing score, a student is issued a high school equivalency diploma by the State Department of Education.
Substitute Teacher Training
The Adult Education Program facilitates the training of new substitute teachers for the St.Charles Parish Public Schools Human Resources Department. All new substitute teachers must complete an application for employment, required pre-employment paperwork and fingerprint verification.
In addition, each applicant is required to attend a FREE one day training specifically designed to target classroom skills necessary to become an effective “guest teacher”. If you would like more information about becoming a substitute teacher in St.Charles Parish, please contact the Human Resources Department at 985-785-6289.
Online Instruction & Technology Use
Students who are registered as students at our centers (both day and evening) have access to technology-based instruction. An online “virtual seat” is also available to students who qualify by enrolling at one of our centers and by attending at least 12 hours of instruction at one of our sites. All students who wish to utilize our district’s technology must have a signed copy of the Acceptable Use policy.
If you already have your high school diploma or GED and would like to become a paraeducator (teacher’s aide), we offer the required training. This mini-refresher course consists of the following components:
- A practice TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education)
- An academic review tailored to your educational needs
- Completion of the TABE test which qualifies you for employment with St. Charles Parish Public Schools
- In order to complete this refresher course, a participant must attend at least 12 hours at one of our adult learning centers and score at least a 10th grade average on the TABE test. Once the refresher course is complete, your scores will be sent to the Human Resources office.
You are welcome to attend at the time that is most convenient for you. Some paraeducator applicants complete this course in a few days, while others may choose to take several weeks. It’s all up to you!
Remember – we are here you to help you achieve your goals. Feel free to ask our staff for more information on becoming a paraeducator.
