• St. Charles Parish Public Schools COVID-19 School Closure FAQs

    St. Charles Parish Public Schools is committed to keeping you informed throughout the mandated school closure. We have developed these Frequently Asked Questions as a resource. The FAQs will continue to be updated as information becomes available. Please check this document often throughout the closure. The latest information will always be available at www.stcharles.k12.la.us/coronavirus.

    GENERAL INFORMATION:

    1. How long will schools be closed? What about events?
      On April 15, 2020, Governor Edwards announced that school buildings will remain closed through the end of the 2019-2020 school year. All school and district events during this time are cancelled or postponed. Please check with individual schools for information on if/when specific events will be rescheduled.

    2. Will the school system continue to provide grab-and-go meals for students for the rest of the school year?
      Yes. Meal distribution by SCPPS will take place each Tuesday through May 26 from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM at the Lafon Performing Arts Center.


    3. Will At-Home Learning continue now that schools are closed for the rest of the school year?
      Yes. Please review the Phase III At-Home Learning Family Handbook produced by the school system. The handbook includes important information on assignments, timelines, grade calculations and technology support.


    4. What if I don’t have Internet access at home?
      Limited income households can apply internet access for $5-$10 per month through AT&T AccessCox Connect2Compete, and CenturyLink Lifeline. Charter Communications will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 students who do not already have a subscription. To enroll, call 1-844-488-8395.

      Free Wi-Fi is also available in the parking lots of the St. Charles Parish Library branches. See the library’s Facebook page at ly/SCPlibrary for additional information.

    5. What if I don’t have a technology device to complete the At-Home Learning?
      SCPPS distributed a Chromebook to families in need of technology to support at-home learning as identified through surveying by school teachers. If you are in need of a technology device, please contact your child’s teacher or principal.


    6. Are we going to have to make-up these days at the end of the 2019-2020 school year?
      No. The Governor's proclamation suspended required seat time minutes.


    7. Will schools, buildings and buses be cleaned during the school closure?
      All schools, buildings, and buses will be deep cleaned and disinfected prior to students’ return.

    8. What will happen with Pre-K/Head Start and Kindergarten Registrations?
      We are working on an online process to register for kindergarten. A plan to physically turn in Pre-K/Head Start applications is also being developed. Once both are final, we will share that information with the public.


    9. Will LEAP testing be rescheduled? What about state testing?
      The U.S. Department of Education has approved the Louisiana Department of Education’s waiver request of assessment, accountability, and reporting requirements under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This means Louisiana will not require standardized testingfor the 2019-2020 school year. SCPPS will not conduct standardized testing this school year.

    10. Will report cards still be issued?
      Once grades are finalized at the end of the school year, report cards will be issued accordingly.


    11. What about athletics?
      The Louisiana High School Athletic Association announced on April 9 that all remaining Winter and Spring sports seasons including games, practices and championship series have been cancelled.


    12. Will items left at school be able to be picked-up in the future?
      Yes. Dates to pick-up items will be determined at a later time by schools once it is safe to do so. Schools will communicate that information to families and employees.


    13. What about the balance in my child’s Before/After School Care Account that has been pre-paid?
      The balance will rollover to the next school year. If a refund is needed, please contact Ms. Charmaine Williams at
      cwilliams7@stcharles.k12.la.us.

    14. What about the balance in my child’s MySchoolBucks account for school meals?
      Meal balances will rollover to the next school year. The student account follows the student from year-to-year and school-to-school. If your child is graduating or moving to another school district, please contact Ms. Lorraine LeBlanc, Child Nutrition Bookkeeper, at
      lleblanc@stcharles.k12.la.us with the student name and school to request a refund.

     

    HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT INFORMATION:

    On April 7, SCPPS provided Senior Course Credit and Graduation Guidance through a Frequently Asked Questions document. Please review that information on the district’s website in addition to the below.

    1. Will a student who has not completed the financial aid planning requirement (FAFSA) be eligible to graduate?
      The financial aid requirement (FAFSA) has been waived by LDOE for graduating seniors who will graduate by August 31.

    2. What if a senior needs a LEAP 2025 high school assessment score to be eligible to graduate?
      The spring LEAP 2025 assessment window has been cancelled, and the requirement has been waived for currently enrolled graduating seniors who will graduate by August 31, 2020.

    3. What guidance has been provided for Advanced Placement (AP), CLEP, and International Baccalaureate Assessments?
              AP:
      In-person exams are canceled and instead a 45-minute AP exam will be taken online at home. The College Board has provided online review classes for students. Exams will be given from May 11-22. Make-up test dates will be available for each subject from June 1-5. Each subject’s exam will be taken on the same day at the same time, worldwide.                 CLEP: 
      CLEP Testing Centers are closed. The College Board will provide CLEP exam vouchers for registration tickets that expired after March 1, 2020. The exam voucher will be good through June 30, 2021, and all scores earned by 2020 cohort members through June 30 will be used for accountability purposes.

                IB:
      May 2020 IB Exams are canceled.

    4. Will ACT testing for high school juniors be rescheduled?
      The ACT will not be held on June 2 at Destrehan or Hahnville High School. However, there will be other opportunities for students to take the ACT. All juniors will have three (3) opportunities to take the ACT in the 2020-2021 school year:
    • October 2020 - all 2021 seniors (juniors of 2019-2020) will test at school
    • One (1) voucher - optional for a Saturday 2020 fall administration
    • March 2021 - optional with juniors of 2020-2021 at school

      Any junior or senior that would like to register for the Saturday ACT on June 13 or July 18 may get a voucher from their school to use for the registration fee. Each high school will provide a process for doing this. These two administrations may be used by a 2020 Senior for fall college admission.

    1. What if my student is taking a college class (dual enrollment)?
      Southeastern Louisiana University: 
      At this time, students should continue working through their course syllabus and completing assignments online. The high school dual enrollment teachers are providing support for students. Dual enrollment course materials can be accessed online at selu.edu.  If a student chooses to withdraw from the dual enrollment course, this must be done by Friday, April 3, 2020.

      University of New Orleans (Satellite Center Only - Engineering, STAR, HRT): 
      Dual enrollment faculty members are working with their respective university departments to continue providing coursework through Moodle. Students should continue to check email and/or Moodle accounts for further information from their instructors. The last day to drop courses was Friday, March 20; however, if a student wishes to withdraw after March 20, it is recommended the student contact UNO. Final grades are due on May 19, 2020. University information can be found at www.uno.edu.

      High school students who are taking college courses AT the college/university (Nicholls, Delgado, SELU, UNO): 
      Follow the guidelines and instructions set by the college or university.

    2. What about senior supplies (invitations, cap & gowns)? How can we pick these up?
      Destrehan High Senior Supply Pick-Up Information: If you were not able to attend the pick-up at school on April 8, please contact Herff Jones directly to make arrangements.

      Hahnville High Senior Supply Pick-Up Information: If you were not able to attend the pick-up at school on April 2, please contact Jostens directly to make arrangements.

    3. What about graduations?
      Graduation ceremonies will not be held in May as previously scheduled. Arrangements have been made to tentatively host graduation ceremonies on July 11 at the Pontchartrain Center, if allowed by government and health officials. Destrehan High School Graduation is tentatively scheduled for 1:00 PM, and Hahnville High School Graduation is tentatively scheduled for 6:00 PM on July 11 at the Pontchartrain Center.


    4. Will diplomas be given to graduating students prior to the in-person graduation ceremonies tentatively set for July 11?
      Yes. High schools will arrange for a pick-up of diplomas at school. We recognize that students may need their diploma prior to when ceremonies are possibly set to take place on July 11.


    5. Will high schools try to reschedule PROM?
      PROM and PROMAPALOOZA are postponed indefinitely. If alternate plans are able to be made at a later date, high schools will share that information.

    6. What about ring ceremonies for juniors?
      Junior ring nights previously scheduled to take place in May of 2020 will now be held in September at the Lafon Performing Arts Center on September 2 for Hahnville High School and September 3 for Destrehan High School.


    7. Will SAT testing be rescheduled?
      The College Board has canceled the March 28, 2020, and May 2, 2020, SAT administration. Students who already registered for May, whose March test centers were closed, or who do not receive March scores because of any irregularities will receive refunds per the College Board.

    8. What if a work permit is needed for a minor?
      In response to the current COVID-19 event per La. R.S. 23:184.1, the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) will begin issuing sixty (60) day blanket Employment Certificates for employers desiring to employ minors in the State of Louisiana.     9. What about senior projects? Should senior students still work on senior projects?
      Senior Projects are no longer be requiredfor the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

    10. Will seniors’ last day still be the same as previously scheduled?
      Yes. Grades for seniors are due May 8.
