  • Hahnville High School Band - 2020 Open House Information - August 13, 2020

     Greetings band families,

On behalf of Mr. Blocker and myself I would like to welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year.  Certainly the virtual nature of this open house serves as proof that we are not doing business as usual.  We would like to take this opportunity to update you on several things and provide the most up to date information about band as we move forward into the school year.

For the veterans among you, this is the time of year where we are typically worried about three things; fees, calendars, and physicals.  For the rookies out there, these are things that you have heard of but probably still have questions about.  We are still following through with the collection of fees, the selling of calendars, and the collection of physical forms.  At a typical open house I would be telling you how well band camp went, how hard the kids worked, and reminding you about dates and the need for chaperones.  For this open house I’m just hoping that you are all healthy and that school is going well for your students.

Our new schedule presented us with new challenges and we had plans to meet them all.  The addition of Covid-19 concerns and the creation of eLearning have created more challenges and certainly more questions.  I hope to answer a few here.  To be clear, whether your student scheduled band for one semester or both semesters, they are in band.  Band is a yearlong activity regardless of the number of credits that have chosen.  Those students selecting only one credit of band have been placed in the second semester.  It was our plan to handle the needs of the first semester in afterschool band.  If not for the current Covid-19 restrictions everyone would be attending afterschool band every Tuesday and Thursday.  We plan to start afterschool rehearsals with selected groups next week, and once the state enters phase three of reopening we intend to return to full band rehearsals.

Google classrooms have been created for all students.  There is one for those choosing two semesters of band and one for those scheduling only one semester.  We will place the same information and assignments in both of the classrooms.  Those enrolled in the first semester will be required to complete all assignments and those scheduled spring semester only are encouraged to keep up with the assignments with the intention of keeping up their band skills.  All students have been provided access to a music website called Smartmusic which will allow them to practice and play along with assigned music on their own.  Instructions on how to access this website for those not enrolled this semester have already been placed in the Google classroom.

The one thing we are most saddened by is the lack of normalcy for the freshmen class.  The absence of a band camp and some not being in class until the second semester are slowing their introduction to how we do band here at Hahnville.  The band has rich traditions and high expectations.  We are glad to have each student and look forward to the time that we can all be together as one band.

Mr. Blocker and I are in line with the SCPPS message of adaptability, flexibility, and understanding.  We believe communication is key and encourage anyone with questions to email us at egueniot@stcharlew.k12.la.us or lblocker@stcharles.k12.la.us.

Stay safe and have a great year.
