My name is Carrie Sirmon, and I am your child's AP English Language and Composition teacher for the 2020-2021 school year. I realize that this year is very different, and I want to make sure that students and parents have everything they need to be successful this year. Please read below to find out more about the class.
Students will be using Google Classroom for completing and submitting most assignments. Sometimes they will submit on turnitin.com. It is imperative that they check Google Classroom regularly to ensure that they have all of the information they need.
Students should sign into Google Classroom on their home-learning day to complete the attendance form at their designated class times. Students will be counted absent if they do not log in at their class times.
Google Classroom for AP Language is organized by topics. Students have access to monthly calendars, lesson slides, and other items that will assist them this semester. Students should refer to the calendar and the lesson slides daily.
Please ask your child to share Google Classroom with you. If you have access, you will be able to see the announcements I make to the class as well as your child's missing work, progress on assignments, or upcoming work.
The lesson slides are organized by week and by student team color (purple/gold).
Students should open the slides and work on the assignments for each day.
We typically review the home-learning slides before the students leave for the day, so students should have no issues with knowing what to do. If they do have questions, they are encouraged to email with specific questions, and I will help.
My syllabus is posted in Google Classroom, and the students have a condensed verson in their binders.
The syllabus covers general expectations of the class, including information about the AP Exam in May. All students are expected to take the exam May 12, 2021.
I have also included my email address in the syllabus for students to use if they need assistance. I answer emails very quickly, so it is the best way to contact me. I encourage students to email me wheneve they have questions, but they should also know that I am not awake at midnight. I'll respond when I can in the morning.
We will also build a community on Google Classroom. I ask students to help each other out as much as they can by answering questions or offering suggestions for improvement.
I look forward to working with all of the students this semester, and I look forward to one day meeting you!
