School Board Conducts Search For New Superintendent
The St. Charles Parish School Board is utilizing a Community Advisory Committee to provide input in the selection of a new superintendent to be named at its regularly scheduled meeting on March 20, 2019. The committee is scheduled to meet for the first time on January 16, 2019, at the School Board Office.
The committee will serve as an integral part of the selection process but is only the first step in seeking community input. A survey for community members was developed and community members submitted their responses online in December.
“Selecting a superintendent is one of the most important tasks, if not the most important task, that is carried out by a school board,” said John Smith, superintendent search coordinator of the St. Charles Parish School Board. “We have developed a well-thought out, transparent process to include input from all stakeholders.”
The Community Advisory Committee will first meet to consider qualities and attributes needed in the next superintendent. Once the school board has narrowed down the field of candidates, the committee will meet with the finalists in a question and answer session to compile further input for the board.
The committee will represent a cross-section of stakeholders throughout the parish. Each school board member selected one constituent/parent from his/her district. These individuals are joined by students, employees, clergy, business and industry representatives, and a school system retiree.
The position will become vacant upon the retirement of Superintendent Felecia Gomez-Walker on July 1, 2019. During her 41 years with St. Charles Parish Public Schools, Gomez-Walker has served in a number of capacities in the system and presided over numerous curriculum, communication, construction, technology, finance and community relations projects.
