Mr. Smith Bio:

John L. Smith was elected to the School Board in 1986. He is a native of St. Rose, and a 1959 graduate of Mary McCleod Bethune High School. He went on to earn a degree in speech, social studies and school administration from Southern University. Mr. Smith is retired after more than 30 years as a teacher and coach.

In addition to Mr. Smith's service on the School Board, he is involved in community and professional organizations as a member of the National Schools Board Association, Louisiana School Boards Association, Louisiana Caucus of Black School Board Members, Fifth African Baptist Church, and the River Parish Golf Association. He has served in numerous roles on the state level as a two-time president of the Louisiana School Boards Association, and has been recognized by a number of local and state organizations for his outstanding contribution to education and community. He is married to Evelyn J. Smith, has two children and nine grandchildren, and resides in St. Rose.
